Dr. James Alan Calvert, Ph.D., CSP, CHMM, CEM, PEM, CPEA is the BWXT Corporate EHS Audit Program Manager & Corporate OSHA Adjudicate, Corporate Emergency Preparedness Subject Matter Expert, EPIS Section Technical Advisor and Chief Company 18 Emergency Operations (Fire, EMS, Hazmat). He was the Nuclear Operations Group – Lynchburg Manager, Industrial Health & Safety for over 20 years. He was previously Manager, Environmental Safety & Security Programs and Deputy Site Service Facility Manager for Ericsson, Inc. He was also a Safety Engineer for the United States Manned Space Flight Launch Processing Facility at Kennedy Space Center Florida (NASA). Dr. Calvert has served as an Adjunct Professor at Central Virginia Community College since 1999.
Dr. Calvert graduated from Indiana University of Pennsylvania with a Doctor of Philosophy Degree in Safety Sciences in May 2017. Dr. Calvert graduated from West Virginia University with a Master of Science in Safety Science Technology in 1987 and from Fairmont State University in 1985.
Dr. Calvert currently holds professional certifications as a Certified Safety Professional, Board of Certified Safety Professionals, since 1995 (#13256), Certified Hazardous Material Manager, Institute of Hazardous Materials Management, since 2012 (#117301), Certified Emergency Manager, International Association of Emergency Managers, since 1994, Professional Emergency Manager, Virginia Department of Emergency Management since 2003, and Health & Safety Certified Professional Environmental Auditor, Board of Environmental, Health & Safety Auditor Certifications.
Dr. Calvert has earned an Executive Program in Safety Management Certificate and the Advanced Certificate in Safety Management, American Society of Safety Engineers, 2011 & 2004, the Advanced Safety Certificate from National Safety Council, 2003 and Fire Instructor III & Fire Fighter III Certification, National Board on Fire Service Professional Qualifications & Virginia Department of Fire Programs. Dr. Calvert has also attended numerous professional/technical courses on Environmental, Safety, Emergency Preparedness and Industrial Security topics to maintain a comprehensive knowledge base on topics related to my profession. Classes were given by American Society of Safety Engineers, National Safety Congress, American Society of Industrial Security, Department of Homeland Security Training Consortium, Virginia Department of Emergency Services, Virginia Department of Fire Programs, etc., since 1990.
Dr. Calvert was appointed in 2016 by the Governor of Virginia to serve as a member of the Commonwealth of Virginia Fire Service Board. He is also a Professional Member and past President of American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) for 25 years and previously served for 8 years on the ASSE National Educational Standards Committee.
